What a lovely informative web site. I was stationed in Gibraltar - at RAF New Camp from 1952 to 1954 and have very fond memories of Gib. I was an electrician on the RAFs Marine Craft and in my spare time ran the Camp Radiodiffusion. Lovely people on the Rock. Regret, have never been back.

CONGRATULATIONS A FANTASTIC SITE, FOUND INFORMATION WHICH WAS NEW TO ME INSPITE OF THE FACT THAT I AM A GENUINE ROCK SCORPION AS MY FAMILY HAS LIVED IN GIBRALTAR FOR OVER 250 YEARS.MY GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER, OF VERY MODEST ITALIAN ORIGIN WAS ONE OF THE FIRST CIVILIANS TO BE ALLOWED TO LIVE INSIDE THE CITY WALLS AS ONLY THOSE PERSONS CRUCIAL AND IMPORTANT TO THE MILITARY WERE ALLOWED SO TO DO.ALL OTHERS HAD TO LEAVE THE FOTRESS THRU THE CITY GATES BEFORE SUNSET, WHEN THE DRAWBRIDGE WAS LIFTED AND DOORS LOCKED.

I thought I should drop you a line about our Gibraltar exhibition here on Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. My family and I lived and worked on the Rock for a number of years and we still miss the place and think of it as our second home. We now run a visitor centre here in Benbecula and this will be the second Gibraltar exhibition we have held. I have posted an article on our website and have used your site as the main link for info on the Rock. I hope you had a great National Day on the 10th, we had a few drams here thinking about all the great people over there and the fantastic place Gibraltar is.

I came upon this interesting sight while researching ancient Neanderthal relics in Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar. I saw the "rock" with my wife a few years ago while entering the Mediterranean Sea at night aboard SMY WINDSTAR, a motor-sailing ship. We had just departed Tangiers in Morocco and were to explore the western side of the Mediterranean. It was also a meaningful trip as the British were celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar....The skipper, a charming Englishman, and I had a wonderful chat about it. Although I am an American citizen, I was born in Bolivia with mostly a Spanish heritage (Heritage includes northern Italian and Austrian.) Being an Army veteran, I am interested in all things military, of course. But I was never aware of this particular Operation Tracer. How interesting! I had read about the different currents entering the straights and how German submarines used this information to enter/exit the Mediterranean without the use of their engines (silent mode) in order to avoid detection. Thank you for contributing to the rich history of this area.

Have just come back to the UK after a marvellous visit to Gib. I lived there 1960 to 1963, in Buena Vista Road, and attended St Christopher's and Loreto Convent Schools - my sister was born in the Military Hospital. It was wonderful to see the old places again, especially to be there for Gib Day! Great to browse your web site - hopefully we will be back for real again :-)

Thanks for a truly great site. Discovered this during some research and it brought to mind many happy childhood memories. I lived in Gib from 1961 to 1963, at RAF North Front, when my father - who sadly died last year - was stationed there with 224 Squadron. Thoroughly enjoyed the detailed descriptions and images from one of the world's most unique places.

It was nice to have met you even though it was by accident. Your knowledge of the place you obviously love is fantastic. The private tour you gave me of one of the old Gun Batteries was wonderful. We also visited the other sites you recommended. I hope the tourist board recognise your worth. Hope to meet you again when we return someday.

I was in the RAF and was stationed at (what was) RAF New Camp. It was an RAF Marine Craft Unit and I was their electrician from 1952 to 1954. I was also the camp disc-jockey. I simply adored the place and have always threatened to re-visit but, now at the age of 75, still haven't managed it but, I have fond memories of Gib. Long may it remain British. When I can afford it, one day, my wife and I would like to come once more. My love to all you lovely people.

I was born in Gibraltar, educated there, spent a few years from 1975 to 1982 working for the Ministry of Defence 642 Signal Squadron, for the best part of my time with them I worked within the Rocks Honeycomb Tunnel Systems and Caves, I also spent a few years with the Gibraltar Regiment. I left Gibraltar in 1982. Today whilst in the process of arranging a two week holiday on the Rock of Gibraltar for my Granddaughter and I, I stumbled on your site, for the last three hours you and your staff have given my Granddaughter and I an unexpected wonderful time.
Some how I could within my own mind see myself playing as a child in most of the images on your site, then as a young adult not only during the working hours spent there but also in the many happy years I spent on the Rock. Your site is just unreal, full of invaluable information, money saving ideas, the ability of a forward planing, your advise on the health and safety aspects on individual trips in and around the Rock of Gibraltar.
Sir, you have surpassed all others, you must be one of a rare few artist in the world that can make a photograph come alive. Thanks

I'm extremely impressed & hoping for My fourth visit to the Rock to come to fruition very shortly. I first visited as a child on a troopship in 1959, then returned to serve there in 1980 & my eldest Daughter was born there, one more visit on holiday in 1989. The lighting in lower St Michaels cave looks good, better than the installation I did in 1980, wheres the boat gone?
Looking forward emmensly to returning soon to my old haunts, WELL DONE !

I first saw The Rock from a troopship on the way to the Suez Crisis , at night. I vowed to visit one day and after three visits decided to live there. Two of the happiest years of my life but for family reasons had to return to the U.K. Now go over three or four times a year Love Gibraltar, the people, and it is one of the few places left where one can feel safe. In the meantime I regularly look at your excellent site.

Just a quick note to say I have just visited Gibraltar for the first time. Only a day trip from The Costa Del Sol this time. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it certainly exceeded any expectation I may have had. I was most impressed by the friendship of the local people, and the time they took to help a tourist with sometimes a hopeless sense of direction. I'll be back.
Thanks to all Gibraltarians. You're lovely people.

In 1980 my wife and I had a day trip to Gibraltar. I always remember having a mini bus ride up the Rock and the guide saying 'That is Africa' and pointing over the sea. Alas it was misty with heavy rain and we could not even see the harbour never mind Africa. Always wanted to return but never managed it. However, last week our Grand daughter visited on my recommendation and had a very enjoyable day. She brought me back a copy of 'After the Battle. Gibraltar Issue number 21'. An excellent read about the history, construction of tunnels and airport landing strip , However also excellent was the web site showing all the detailed information of Gibraltar especially the 360 degree facilities of looking at the Town and tunnels and maps of the area.
May I convey my thanks and appreciation of the best web site I have come across. Despite being in my late 70,s I am reconsidering a trip.

If you are interested in military history Gibraltar's the place to be. This was my fourth visit and I am hoping there will be many more. On my last trip I visited the newly opened WW11 tunnels which is well worth a visit. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and obviously interested in his subject. I can see this attraction becoming one of the best on the rock.

How wonderful to find your site! I lived in Gib for three years as a girl, spent a lot of time in the museum and clambering all over the Rock at Windmill Hill among other places.
