18th Century Magazine
This magazine is the largest of its type remaining anywhere in the world. It has been in a derelict state for decades, preliminary work has taken place to clear debris and assess the condition.
The photographs on this page show the general layout consisting of four large magazine chambers completely encircled by a two level lighting corridor. This would have provided light through windows along the walls, preventing any naked flame from lamps getting near the gun powder held in the magazine.
