Formally called Queen Anne's or Queen's Battery, it mounted twelve guns in 1727.
After the Great Siege it was renamed after Princess Charlotte, eldest daughter of George III who then became Princess Royal. The old Princess Royal battery was located near the entrance to the Middle Galleries. The plan of the battery was fan-like and from 1834 -1859 it mounted nine 24-pdrs, but by 1863 it had two 7 -inch RBLs and seven 32 pdrs.
There were five 64-pdr. RMLs in 1885 and three in 1889. Later it became one of the 6-inch BL positions.
In 1886 it was proposed to install one 6-inch BL Mark IV and the emplacement is shown on a drawing dated January 1895.
