The panorama opposite shows the junction where the WW2 tunnelling meets Willis's Gallery of 1789. The doorway to the surface leads out onto Willis's Plateau on which Princess Anne's Battery is located. The Gallery was excavated after the Great Siege (1779-1783) as an extension to Queen Gallery (See sections B and D) In 1704, during the capture of the Rock, WILLIS an artillery officer, showed exemplary energy in mounting and serving the guns. As a result the original Spanish Batteries of SAN JOAQUIN, and the Bastion of SAN JOSE in this area were renamed WILLIS'S. This series of galleries is referred to as the Middle Galleries. |
